Read internet headers in msg

Recently, I got a task to read the internet headers in a msg file. This should be a piece of cake, but the interface in Outlook 2007 seems hidden this useful feature. Why I need read internet headers in a msg file? The answer is simple: check the SMTP messages between email servers. The information shows how the message from the sender to the recipients. It contains rich details for tracing SPAM mail. Normally there are 2 ways to block spam mail, block the sender email address and block the mail server. When review the internet headers, IT people will follow those information to block the bad sender and mail server.

Below is the easiest way I found:

  1. Please make sure you got Outlook 2007/2010
  2. Open the msg file by double click it
  3. In the rubbin area, there is a small box icon in the option section, click it to read the message details
