User run minicom in Ubuntu

minicom is a great terminal program for connecting the console of Cisco devices or others. However, normal user cannot run minicom because of a permission issue when accessing the hardware (USB / serial port).

minicom error

To allow user to run minicom section, just put the user under the group belongs to the hardware. In this case, it is tty.

device permission - tty8

Run the following command to put user into tty group:

usermod -a -G tty <user name>

For USB device, the group name is dialout. So, the command should be – usermod -a -G dialout <user name>.

device permission - ttyUSB0

After finished the command, remember logout and login to let the new settings activate.

Other Linux distros are applicable, too. Hope the information is useful.
